Tribute to Deborah Hines 1966 - 2020
Dedicated to the memory of Deborah Hines
Deborah Hines passed away in St Leonard's Hospice, on the 30th
November this year. Despite her long illness Deborah, continued to work effectively until
only a couple of weeks before her death, carrying out the job to which she was
dedicated. She headed the Department of Language & Linguistic Science's
administration team as Department Manager, a role she performed with extraordinarily
good judgement, and kindness to staff and students. Deborah was loved and respected
by everyone. Her advice and guidance were invaluable "“ her loss will be keenly felt.
Deborah studied Classics at Churchill College, Cambridge. After Cambridge, she lived
in London and worked at the Metal Exchange in the City. She moved north to work at
Sheffield British Glass Recycling, after which she joined the University of Sheffield as
administrator in the Department of Human Communication Sciences. When she moved
to the University of York she was Department Administrator for the Department of Chemistry, and finally she was appointed Department Manager for the Department of Language &
Linguistic Science.
In recent months Deborah kept in frequent contact with colleagues and friends, by
phone, FaceTime and Zoom. Her humour never deserted her; and because some of us
could see her in her hospice room, sometimes catching moments of conversation
between her and the staff, we know how beautifully she was cared for. The hospice staff
did everything possible to encourage Deborah, to support her morale and to make her
as comfortable as was possible in the circumstances. They ensured that Deborah was
in control of her life, to the end, and that she was able to endure everything with dignity.
This page is dedicated to donations in gratitude for her care at St Leonard's, and
especially in tribute to Deborah's memory.
